Dance Architect is proud to present our 2017 Award winners season, The Women Choreographed by Kayla Douglas and India Stewart.
This season of new emerging choreographers is a testament to the ever growing strength of female creators in Melbourne. Dance Architect is proud to be producing this exciting and innovative season of new contemporary dance work.
The Woman (by Kayla Douglas) She has the power to both silence a room and make it erupt - the woman.
Intent (by India Stewart) Based from the quote “The road to hell is paved in intent”, what you intend to do isn’t exactly what you achieve. Your actions will take a toll once your surroundings notice you’re not in line.
India Stewart is an 18 year old, Sydney based, Classical and Contemporary trained dancer. It was at age 15 she knew that she wanted to make contemporary and choreography into a serious career then taking on full time dance for 2017 and continuing into 2018. She trained at Joanne Grace School of Dance for 15 years and Trained with Tim Podesta at Projection Dance School this year as part of their Junior Artist program. She has completed Grade 1 - Advanced 2 in RAD ballet examinations and has received her Certificate IV in dance. This year she was accepted into Rambert Dance Schools full time program in London and also was apart of the show “Forte” in May, choreographed by Tim Podesta and danced along side dancers from Wayne McGregor Company from London and Mara Galeazzi who is a former principal ballet dancer from The Royal Ballet Company also in London.
Kayla Douglas is an emerging artist born and raised in Perth Western Australia where she began her contemporary training in 2014 at John Curtin College of the Arts. In 2016 she began her completion of her diploma in dance through Transit Dance. During that time she worked with a number of choreographers including Jo Lloyd, Kialea Nadine-Williams and Paea Leach to name a few. She also seconded with several companies including Australian Dance Theatre, Dancenorth and CO3 as well as performed Garry Stewart’s Birdbrain remounted by previous cast members Daniel Jaber and Lina Limosani.
She is currently working with Israel Aloni as part of the cohort of Transit International Professional Pathway (Tr.IPP) where she has worked with many incredible artists including James Vu An Pham, Graham Adey, Natalie Allen, Chris Evans, Tobiah Booth Remmers and Keren Rosenburg, all of which have aided her process in developing and refining her creative practice.
